Tacloban City – The Local Chief Executive of Zumarraga town in the province of Samar is pursuing the shelter assistance intended for Typhoon Ruby victims from Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) after previous local administration failed to act in accordance with all the requirements needed for the release of the said fund.
Mayor Nelip Fiqueroa personally went to DSWD Regional Field Office 8 recently to submit all the necessary documents for the release of about P23 million shelter assistance to Typhoon Ruby victims in her island-municipality.
Sources close to the mayor said that Fiqueroa is keen on claiming the funds as “it is due to the victims of her municipality.” “Never mind if it’s late as long as the help will still reach the concerned families,” the mayor was quoted as saying.
Figueroa’s predecessor ran for Congressman in the province’s first district in 2016 May elections but succumbed via landslide to incumbent Congresswoman Mila Tan.
Accordingly, the previous administration has failed to comply with the requirements stipulated by DSWD in order to release the funds.
The mayor said in a statement that she feels it is her moral obligation to ensure that services such as disaster assistance reach her constituents.
Zumarraga has a population close to 20,000 and was one of the hardly hit areas when the 3-day typhoon struck in December of 2014.
Following guidelines given by DSWD, the source said, partially damaged households will be given P5,000 while owners of totally damaged houses will receive P10,000.00.
Zumarraga town, reachable through a two-hour boat ride, has 25 barangays.
