CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar – “It does not mean that because we are focused with containing illegal drugs, that we have already neglected operations for special laws.”
This is more or less the statement of Samar Police Provincial Director Elmer Pelobello as he answered questions from the media at the Samar Day press conference today.
Pelobello was firm in saying that they are trying to address the drug menace in the first six months of President Duterte’s reign.
He added that after this, the police will still continue to address all forms of crimes including illegal gambling. Pelobello said that in as far as operation on illegal drugs, some 2000 suspects from many parts of Samar province have ‘surrendered.’ 1,038 are under process, which means they executed affidavits that they will refrain from going back to their ‘old trade’.
Pelobello meanwhile brushed aside impunity to the suspects on the killing incident in Barangay Bahay in Sta. Margarita town.
He said the chief of police was relieved and his men filed criminal charges against the suspects.
He also stressed that he sent a platoon of cops to the area to normalize the situation in the area. He also said that there are more surrenderees in Calbayog City than in Catbalogan City.
Since July, the police have implemented 28 drug buy-bust operations, arrested some 34 suspects and tried to solve the five deaths linked to illegal drugs.
Very soon, he said, his men will do a synchronized check point in coordination with the Philippine Army (PA), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Criminal Investigation Division Group (CIDG), and the Highway Patrol Group (HPG).
He warned all motorcycle owners to fix their problems on licenses and registrations before the onset of the checkpoints. (Nimfa Quirante / PIA 8-Samar)
